What happens on Easter?

Hello, young people out there! The Easter holidays are here again!

Simply put, Easter is a Christian religious festival that marks the celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection after his crucifixion.

Easter celebration has some critical days that are recognized by most Christians, and these are Palm Sunday, which is the last Sunday that comes before Easter, followed by the Wednesday before Easter, which is called Spy Wednesday, and Holy Wednesday. The last three days before Easter are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.

In Malawi, Easter festivities begin on Good Friday, which, just like many religious celebrations, was declared a public holiday. The holiday is extended further to Easter Monday, which falls on the first day of April. In Malawi, official business seemingly comes to a standstill. It does not matter whether one is Christian, religious, or not. Everyone jumps into the celebration mood.

Unfortunately, most people tend to spend the Easter holidays making merry, which is characterized by taking whatever they lay their hands on so long as it has a strong intoxicating effect after consumption. What follows is chaotic, as intoxicated adults and young people are compelled by their stupors to do things they do not normally do. Young people and their innocence have ended up with unintended pregnancy, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including HIV, because they were unable to control their sexual engagements, were too drunk to negotiate for safe sex, or denied having it with someone altogether.

Some things that happen during Easter are not supposed to happen.

How to Safeguard One’s Dignity During Festivities
