I am feeling shy to get tested for Sexually Transmitted Infections
My name is Maggie and I am 17 years old. I have a boyfriend and we started having sex. I have just realized that I have a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). I was told that STIs can cause serious and painful health problems so I am so troubled. My boyfriend already got tested and treatment at the hospital and was told that I should also go to get tested and treatment. I am worried about my reputation if I am seen going for a test as people might think that I have been reckless with my life. What should I do?
Dear Maggie,
There are different reasons why young people do not get tested and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections. One of the reasons is being shy as you have already highlighted. There is nothing to be shy and afraid to get tested and treatment for STIs due to misconceptions and stigma associated with STIs.
The sooner you get treatment for an STI, the easier it will be to treat. If you have questions on STIs discuss with your parents or a trusted relative. If you still have further questions on STIs go to a nearest Youth Friendly Health Service to get more information.
