Personal hygiene during menstruation

Every girl reaches a point in her life when she starts menstruation. During this time most girls find it hard to associate with their friends and some even abscond classes as they do not know how they will cope with the menstrual cramps. Some girls struggle to maintain their hygiene and end up staining their clothes and producing bad smell. This is one thing that every girl who is menstruating tries to avoid.

But how can you maintain self-hygiene during menstruation?

Here are some tips that you can follow:

  • You can use sanitary pads (re-usable or disposable), tampons, cotton or even a piece of a clean cotton cloth.
  • You should frequently (3 to 4 times a day) change your sanitary pad, tampon, cotton or the cloth that you have used to avoid staining your clothes or producing bad smell.
  • If possible you should take a bath frequently (at least twice a day) and change your clothes.

NOTE: when a girl is not taking care of herself during menstruation, she can produce a bad smell hence observing personal hygiene is very important. If you are experiencing any problem during this time, you can visit your nearest Youth Friendly Health Service facility or ask elders for guidance.
