Puberty in boys

Puberty in boys

A boy goes through many changes as they transition to puberty. Some of these stages are changes in voice as it breaks and gets permanently deeper, growth of penis and testicles, growth of pubic hair at the base of the penis, growth of underarm hair and having wet dreams (involuntary ejaculation of semen as they sleep).  Boys also go through a growth spurt and become taller.

In many instances, for boys, puberty begins at age 9, 10, 11, or up to 16, although starting as early as age 9 or as late as age 14 is still considered normal. Some boys mature faster than their peers, and some physical changes may be more gradual than others.

There are different reasons which leads to early and delayed puberty in boys. Delayed puberty does not mean that a boy has a problem. Early puberty is caused by factors such as genetic disorders, food, environment in which a boy lives in and daily habits. It does not matter whether a boy starts puberty early or experience delayed puberty, what matters is that as time passes, every boy undergoes puberty. There is no set age for puberty so try not to worry if your body changes earlier or later than your friends.

During puberty, boys may develop sexual feelings towards friends of opposite sex or others. Sexual feelings may cause boys to have an erection of the penis. During this period, it is very important for a boy to understand and have correct information on their sexual reproductive life which would help them to make better choices as they are able to understand implications of unwanted pregnancy, prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Remember that everyone’s body is different such that some people grow faster than others.  In the same way your first signs of puberty may also differ from one person to the other.

As boys, you can get further information on puberty at your nearest health facility which provides youth friendly health services, or calling Tithandizane National Helpline’s toll free number 116 or visiting YONECO’s youth drop-in centers.
